Massage contraindications: when it is better to postpone a session

Fever, inflammation, fresh injuries, skin problems, flare-ups, pregnancy: when to reschedule a massage and what to tell your therapist in advance.

A cup of tea and folded towels in a quiet massage studio room

Massage is a pleasant way to rest, ease tension and recover. But there are days and conditions when it is better to reschedule a session. Knowing the main massage contraindications is not about being afraid; it is about coming at the right moment and getting only good things from your session.

Below is a clear list of situations when it is worth waiting, plus a reminder of what to tell your therapist in advance. This article is not a substitute for a doctor's advice: if you are in doubt, ask a specialist who knows your health.

Massage contraindications: when to postpone a session

Fever and feeling unwell

A cold, flu, a raised temperature, aches and general weakness are signs that your body needs rest right now, not an extra load. Move your session to a time when you feel well again. This matters both for you and for other guests of the studio.

Acute inflammation

If an area is red, swollen, hot to the touch or painful, that is a reason not to massage it and to see a doctor instead. The same goes for any acute inflammatory condition: it is better to wait until it has passed.

Fresh injuries

Bruises, sprains, dislocations, fractures and recent surgery: the injured area needs to be left alone. A doctor will tell you when you can return to massage and to what extent. Sometimes other areas can still be massaged, but you need to tell the therapist in advance.

Skin problems in the massage area

Rashes, irritation, cuts, grazes, fresh sunburn, fungal or infectious skin conditions: massage should not be done on these areas. If the problem is local, the therapist can work around it. If the irritation is widespread, it is better to reschedule. After a beach holiday, pay particular attention to sunburn.

Flare-ups of chronic conditions

If a chronic condition — for example of the joints, spine, heart or blood vessels — is currently flaring up, it is better to postpone the massage and discuss it with your doctor. Even outside a flare-up, it is worth asking your doctor which kind of massage suits you and passing that on to the therapist.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy does not always mean giving up massage, but this is best decided together with the doctor who is looking after you. Be sure to mention it when you book: Pavel will choose a gentle technique or suggest postponing the session.

Other situations worth thinking about

There are conditions where it is best to discuss massage with a doctor beforehand:

  • serious heart or blood vessel conditions, including thrombosis;
  • blood clotting disorders;
  • cancer or ongoing treatment;
  • severe pain with no clear cause.

And a few simple everyday points. Try not to eat a heavy meal for 1–1.5 hours before your session, and don't come after drinking alcohol. If you are very tired after a journey, you can choose a gentler massage, such as the relaxing anti-stress massage.

What to tell your therapist in advance

The more Pavel knows about how you feel, the better he can choose the technique and pressure. Before the session, it is worth mentioning:

  1. injuries and operations, even old ones if they still make themselves felt;
  2. chronic conditions and whether there is a flare-up right now;
  3. pregnancy;
  4. any medication you take regularly;
  5. allergies, including to oils and scents, since aromatherapy is used at the studio;
  6. areas you would rather not have touched, and the pressure you find comfortable.

You can do this when you book, on WhatsApp or by phone, or at the start of the session. We have written more about preparing for your visit in our article on your first massage session.

If you are not sure

There is no need to decide on your own whether something is "allowed". Tell Pavel about your condition, and he will choose a gentle technique or suggest moving the session to another day. And if the question concerns your health, the best first step is to see a doctor.

If you had planned a firm deep tissue massage but are not feeling well right now, it is better to reschedule or choose a gentler option. To change the time, simply message or call us.

Massage is for rest, not instead of treatment

At Serenity, massage is about rest, easing tension and recovery. It does not treat illnesses and does not replace medical care. With pain, numbness, after injuries or with any illness, see a doctor first, and come to us when you want to breathe out and relax.

You can book online on the website, by phone at +995 598 56 02 42 or on WhatsApp, at least 2 hours before the session.

Taking care of yourself also means choosing the right moment. If today is not the day, that is perfectly fine: we will be glad to see you when you are feeling well.
